A roofbolt is a threaded steel rod, typically 16 to 25 millimetres in diameter and 1.5 to 2.5 metres long, driven upward into the roof strata of an underground mine to mechanically tie fractured or weak rock together and prevent falls of ground. The bolt is seated at the collar with a plate and nut, then tensioned to pull the roof into compression and bind layers of potentially unstable stone. This is the primary defense against the sudden collapse that can kill miners or damage equipment in coal mines, metal mines, and hard rock operations.
Roofbolts are installed by hand-held or mobile drilling rigs that bore a slightly undersized hole into the roof. The bolt is then either grouted in place with resin or cement cartridges, or driven in as a friction bolt that relies on tight fit and mechanical friction against the rock walls. Resin-bonded bolts, common in coal mining, use two-part epoxy cartridges that cure in minutes. Friction bolts, driven by percussion or expansion wedges, are faster to install but suited only to competent rock. Some bolts feature a resin shell that activates only when the bolt reaches final depth, reducing installation time while maintaining full anchorage.
The length and spacing of roofbolts are determined by the thickness and quality of the roof strata. Weak shale or mudstone may require 2 metre bolts spaced at 1 metre intervals; stronger sandstone or coal may allow 1.5 metre bolts on 1.5 metre centres. Installation density increases near intersections and around working areas where stress concentrates. A competent roofbolt pattern can stabilize 3 to 5 metres of overburden, effectively creating a reinforced composite layer.
Failure modes and inspection
Roofbolts fail when resin anchorage cures incorrectly or fails to set due to damp or cold conditions, when friction bolts slip under load as rock weight builds, or when the bolt itself corrodes in acidic mine water. Corrosion is a persistent problem in mines with poor ventilation and high humidity. Periodic inspection by pull testing, where a load cell measures tension loss, is the accepted check for bolt integrity. Bolts that have lost more than 10 to 15 percent of their pre-load tension typically require reinforcement or replacement.
The term roofbolt originated in North American coal mining during the mid-twentieth century and has since become standard across all underground extraction. British mining sometimes uses the term roof bolt or resin anchor; Australian operations often specify roofbolt diameter and pattern in centimetres rather than metres. The bolt is part of a wider suite of ground support that includes timber props, steel arches, and shotcrete, but roofbolts have largely replaced passive support in modern operations because they allow faster cycle times and reduce timber consumption.
