Piping is a decorative trim made from a thin cord or rope wrapped tightly in fabric and sewn into the seams or edges of a garment. The cord core, typically made from cotton, polyester, or occasionally jute, is usually 2 to 4 mm in diameter. The outer fabric wrapping, called the bias strip because it is cut diagonally across the grain, allows the piping to flex smoothly around curves without bunching. The finished piping measures between 3 and 6 mm wide when folded and stitched, creating a visible border that defines edges while adding structural reinforcement.
Piping serves both functional and aesthetic purposes in tailoring and garment construction. Functionally, it stabilizes seams on armholes, necklines, and waistbands, reducing fraying and extending garment life. The wrapped cord prevents the raw fabric edges from curling or separating under stress. Aesthetically, it provides a professional finish and allows manufacturers to introduce contrasting colors, patterns, or textures that define the garment's silhouette. A navy wool jacket with red piping on the lapels is a classic example of this dual function.
The production of piping involves two stages. First, the bias strip is cut from fabric at a 45-degree angle to the weave. The strip is then wrapped around the cord using a specialized piping foot or tape-binding machine, which folds the fabric around the cord and stitches it simultaneously. A piping machine can produce 20 to 40 meters per hour depending on the cord diameter and fabric thickness. The piped trim is then sewn into the garment using a zipper foot or piping foot that allows the needle to stitch as close as possible to the cord without hitting it.
Common pitfalls and variants
Piping can fail if the bias strip is cut parallel to the grain rather than at 45 degrees, because it will lack the elasticity needed for curved seams and will pucker when stretched. The cord itself may slip inside the wrapped fabric if tension is uneven during wrapping, creating visible lumps. Thick fabrics or heavily napped materials like corduroy require looser wrapping to prevent the piping from kinking. Double piping, where two piped edges meet at a corner, must be mitered carefully to avoid bulk and maintain clean lines.
Piping appears most often in tailored garments such as jackets, blazers, and formal wear, where its crisp definition suits structured construction. It is also used on children's clothing, uniforms, and upholstered items like cushions and upholstered furniture. The technique has roots in 18th-century military dress uniforms and remains a hallmark of high-quality garment finishing. Modern mass production sometimes replaces piping with simpler flat binding or edge stitching to reduce labor cost, making hand-piped or quality machine-piped garments a marker of more expensive tailoring.
