PIT maneuver

A technique in which a pursuing car bumps the rear fender of a pursued car, causing it to spin out, in order to terminate a car chase.

The PIT maneuver (Pursuit Intervention Technique) is a contact tactic used by law enforcement to disable a fleeing vehicle by striking its rear quarter panel at an angle, forcing it into an uncontrolled spin. The pursuing vehicle's front bumper or fender makes contact with the target vehicle's rear fender, usually at the 4 o'clock or 8 o'clock position relative to the fleeing car's direction of travel. This off-center impact exploits basic physics: the rear of the vehicle is pushed sideways while the front wheels maintain their original direction, creating rotational force that overwhelms steering control and brings the car to rest.

Effective execution requires specific conditions. The maneuver works best at speeds between 35 and 55 mph; below this range, vehicles may not spin completely, and above it the collision becomes dangerously violent. Road surface matters significantly: dry asphalt provides better traction and more predictable results than wet roads or loose gravel, which can cause the striking vehicle to lose control instead. The fleeing vehicle's weight and wheelbase affect outcome; lightweight cars spin more readily than heavy trucks, and longer wheelbase vehicles are generally harder to spin than compact models.

Variations and hazards

Tactical doctrine distinguishes between the controlled PIT, performed at lower speeds with careful positioning, and the high-speed PIT, which carries significant risk of vehicle rollover, secondary collisions, or loss of control by either vehicle. Some agencies use a modified technique called the Precision Immobilization Technique, which applies sustained pressure rather than a sharp impact. Training emphasizes that the maneuver can cause serious injury to occupants through sudden deceleration and collision forces, and unintended consequences include the fleeing vehicle striking bystanders, property, or the police vehicle itself.

The technique emerged in law enforcement training during the 1980s as a formalized alternative to other pursuit termination methods. It became widespread in North American police training but remains controversial due to injury risk and liability. Modern pursuit policies in many jurisdictions restrict its use to serious felony situations and require specific training certification. The tactic's effectiveness depends heavily on officer training, judgment about road conditions and traffic, and a clear assessment that the chase itself poses greater danger than the maneuver.
