A lap sash seatbelt is a two-point restraint system consisting of a lap belt that crosses the pelvis and a diagonal shoulder strap that runs across the chest and torso. The two straps meet at a single buckle typically located near the hip, and the system is anchored to the vehicle frame at three points: two lower anchor points for the lap portion and one upper anchor point for the shoulder strap. This configuration became the standard in most passenger vehicles by the 1970s and remains the primary restraint design in cars today.

The lap portion of the belt is designed to sit low across the hip bones rather than the soft abdominal area. In a collision, this geometry distributes deceleration forces across the pelvis and lower spine, which can withstand greater loads than the abdomen. The diagonal shoulder strap similarly channels forces through the rib cage and shoulder girdle. This two-point contact improves load distribution compared to lap-only belts, which were common in earlier vehicles and caused internal injuries even in moderate crashes.

Variants and modern additions

Most modern vehicles equip the lap sash seatbelt with a pretensioner mechanism that tightens the belt in the first few milliseconds of a crash, taking up slack and improving occupant positioning. Load limiters in the shoulder strap allow controlled release of tension above a threshold force, protecting the ribs and sternum from injury due to overtightening. Some vehicles use dual pretensioners on both lap and shoulder portions. Adjustable upper anchor points (often called shoulder belt height adjusters) allow drivers and passengers to position the shoulder strap higher or lower depending on torso height, improving comfort and safety fit.

The belt webbing itself is typically made from nylon or polyester fabric woven to withstand forces exceeding 3,000 pounds per square inch. The buckle mechanism uses a spring-loaded catch and release button; inertial locking spools prevent the belt from extending during sudden deceleration. Unlike pretensioned systems, these older spools rely on a pendulum-driven mechanism that stops the spool rotation when acceleration exceeds a threshold.

Common failure modes include webbing fraying, pretensioner malfunctions that leave the belt too loose, failed buckle latches, and anchor point corrosion or damage in older vehicles or those exposed to salt spray. Twisted or routed webbing reduces restraint effectiveness. The term 'sash' refers to the diagonal orientation of the shoulder strap, distinguishing this three-point system from earlier two-point lap-only designs and clearly differentiating it from modern multi-point harness systems used in racing or specialized vehicles.
