Pitch mining is the extraction of coal from seams that dip at angles steeper than about 45 degrees from horizontal, often approaching vertical. These steeply inclined deposits present fundamentally different engineering challenges than flat or gently sloping seams. The coal faces themselves become slopes or near-walls down which material must be moved, and workers face problems of loose rock fall, difficult access, and gravity-driven instability that horizontal mining avoids.

The term "pitch" refers to the angle of inclination itself, borrowed from geological language where pitch describes the steepness of a structural feature. Coal seams at such angles are relatively uncommon in major coalfields; they typically result from tectonic folding or faulting that has tilted once-horizontal deposits into steeply angled orientations. South Wales, parts of the Ruhr, and some Appalachian districts contain notable pitch seams worked historically or currently.

Methods and constraints

Underground pitch mining traditionally used pillar-and-stall extraction, but the steep geometry makes standard pillars mechanically unstable. Miners instead relied on timber or later steel support walls built perpendicular to the seam dip to hold back the hanging wall and prevent collapse. Manual undercutting at the coal face was combined with blasting or pick work, with extracted coal falling or being hauled down the incline toward the pit bottom. Modern operations on pitch seams are rare, having largely given way to opencast working where geology permits.

The hazards distinguish pitch mining sharply from standard seam work: spontaneous rock fall from the hanging wall is frequent, support structures can fail under shear stress, and drainage of water is difficult since water flows toward worked-out areas. Ventilation must fight the natural stratification of air masses on a slope. Workers endured some of the worst injury rates in coal mining history, particularly in deep pitch seams where pressure and temperature also increased.

Pitch seams are generally thinner than flat deposits, sometimes only 1 to 2 meters thick, which compounds the labor intensity of extraction. The coal itself is often of good coking quality, which historically justified the extra effort and risk. As pit mechanization advanced through the 20th century, operators abandoned uneconomical pitch workings in favor of easier seams or alternative mining methods, making active pitch mining now largely historical rather than contemporary practice.
