A pitching piece is a substantial horizontal beam that sits beneath a landing or platform in a staircase, carrying the weight of anyone standing on that platform and transmitting it to the structure below. It runs perpendicular to the direction of travel and typically spans between the main walls or posts of the building. This timber acts as the primary support that keeps the landing level and stable, much as a beam supports a floor.
In traditional stair construction, the pitching piece anchors the upper and lower stringpieces, which are the angled timbers that follow the slope of the stairs and carry the treads. The stringpieces rest against or are bolted to the pitching piece, creating a rigid connection that prevents the stair flight from twisting or sagging. The construction demands that the pitching piece be sized generously, typically 4 to 6 inches deep in older work, to withstand both the concentrated load of foot traffic and the shear forces transmitted by the stringer connections.
Variants and installation
Pitching pieces are sometimes called platform beams or landing beams, though the term pitching piece is most common in classical carpentry vocabulary. In masonry buildings, the pitching piece is often built into the walls (called a trimmer beam in some regions), while in timber-frame work it may be supported on posts or brackets. The timber must be straight and free from significant knots in the load zone, as it experiences bending stress; hardwoods such as oak were historically preferred for this reason.
Problems arise when the pitching piece deflects under load, causing the landing to slope or the stringpiece joints to rack and open. Undersizing, moisture-induced warping, or decay in older work are common culprits. A sagging landing also changes the rise and run relationships of the stairs themselves, creating a safety hazard. Repairs often require temporary shoring of the stairs and the installation of additional support posts or sistering a new beam alongside the damaged one.
The name reflects the piece's role in fixing the pitch, or angle, of the ascending and descending flights. By providing an immobile reference point where the stringpieces meet, it locks in the staircase geometry. Understanding its function is essential when diagnosing stair movement or failure, as the pitching piece is frequently the overlooked structural workhorse of older staircases.
