pleach: a woven branch framework for living fences

A pleach is a branch, typically from hazel, willow, or hornbeam, that has been partially cut and bent horizontally to interweave with neighbouring branches, creating a dense living barrier. The process produces a hedge that is both stockproof and windproof, with branches still drawing sap from their rootstock. The pleach itself remains part of a working structure, not a severed piece, and continues to grow and thicken over years.

Pleaching differs from simple hedge-laying in its systematic weaving pattern. Where hedge-laying cuts stems nearly through and lays them at an angle to encourage regrowth, pleaching bends branches more sharply and interlaces them in a lattice, often creating a formal geometric outline. The technique suits species with flexible young wood; hazel coppice is traditional because it produces long, straight, supple shoots. Willow works for wetter ground. Hornbeam and beech suit formal garden hedges because they hold leaves longer into winter and respond well to regular trimming.

The physical demands of pleaching lie in the timing and the knots. Work is done in late winter while sap is low and wood is less brittle. Each pleach must be half-cut near its base so the blade stops short of the bark on the far side, preserving the flow of nutrients. The branch is then pulled down and woven through upright stakes or other pleaches, secured with twisted willow or hazel ties that will eventually be hidden by new growth. Tight weaving and secure tying prevent wind-rock and ensure the branch locks in place as it hardens.

Maintenance and failure modes

A well-pleached hedge requires annual or biennial cutting to maintain form and encourage the development of secondary growth that fills gaps. Neglected pleaches become woody and brittle, and new shoots emerge at odd angles rather than filling the face. The most common failure is poor initial tying: if knots slip or ties rot before the pleaches have hardened off, the structure loses its geometry and the branches spring back out of position. Waterlogging or prolonged drought can cause dieback in the pleaches themselves, leaving weak spots in the barrier.

The term pleach comes from Old French pleshier, rooted in Latin plectere, meaning to braid or interweave. The word carries both the action and the product: a pleached hedge is one that has been pleached, and each individual branch in that structure is also called a pleach. In modern usage, pleaching has seen revival among heritage landscapers and conservation practitioners, partly because the technique creates wildlife habitat in a way that formal clipped hedges do not, and partly because pleached frameworks have genuine structural integrity where purely ornamental hedging does not.
