Poletimber is wood harvested from trees that fall into a specific size window: typically 6 to 11 inches in diameter at breast height (DBH), depending on species and regional standards. Unlike sawtimber, which yields lumber and plywood, poletimber is processed into long, straight poles used for utility lines, fencing, construction scaffolding, and transmission towers. The trees are usually straight and relatively free of major defects, since knots and sweep reject poles outright.

The commercial grading of poletimber depends partly on species. Softwoods like Douglas fir, southern pine, and western red cedar are preferred for utility poles and transmission poles, where creosote or other preservatives will be applied. Hardwoods less commonly enter the poletimber market, though they are sometimes processed into crossarms, brackets, or structural bracing. A pole typically runs 25 to 60 feet in length; the butt diameter usually determines its strength class and working load rating.

Processing and Standards

Poletimber is debarked and often treated with wood preservatives to resist rot and insect damage. Poles destined for utility work must meet American standards (ANSI O5.1) that specify minimum fiber stress at various heights and butt diameters. A Class 1 pole, for example, is the strongest; Classes 2 through 10 step down in strength. The wood is usually dried to a target moisture content before treating; inadequate drying or treating can lead to checking, cupping, or premature failure in service.

The term 'poletimber' itself is a somewhat loose forestry classification. In timber cruising, it is often combined with sawtimber and pulpwood into broader merchantable categories. Foresters distinguish poletimber from sawtimber chiefly by diameter and intended end use, not by a rigid standard. A 10-inch Douglas fir might be cut for poles in one region and peeled for kraft pulp in another, depending on market demand and mill capability.

The market for poletimber is steady but narrow. Utility companies and telecommunications firms are the main buyers, purchasing poles in bulk to replace aging infrastructure or expand networks. Competition from concrete and fiberglass poles has compressed prices, but wood poles remain cheaper upfront and easier to repair locally. Decay at the groundline is the primary failure mode; maintaining treatment standards and addressing butt rot promptly extends pole life from 20 to 50 years depending on wood species, climate, and care.
