Pollarding is the practice of cutting a tree back to its main stem or a framework of primary branches, typically 2 to 4 metres above ground. The cut surface, called the pollard head, heals over and then produces a dense cluster of new shoots in the following growing season. This differs from coppicing, which cuts trees at or near ground level. Pollarding is performed on a multi-year cycle, usually every 2 to 8 years depending on the species and intended use.

The technique has three main practical applications in agriculture and land management. First, it provides renewable timber and fuel wood: willows and poplars are regularly pollarded to yield thin poles, withes, and coppice wood for hurdles, baskets, or firewood. Second, it creates fodder: in Mediterranean and arid regions, pollarded trees like holm oak were historically cut to feed livestock on fresh browse during summer drought when pasture dried out. Third, it shapes and extends the life of ornamental or functional trees in hedgerows and parkland, where it prevents crowding and keeps branches away from buildings or power lines.

Species and cutting technique

Willows, poplars, limes, ashes, and sycamores tolerate pollarding well because they compartmentalize wounds effectively and regenerate vigorously from dormant buds. Oak, beech, and hornbeam can be pollarded but more slowly. The cut must be clean and made just outside the branch collar, ideally during winter dormancy when the tree is least stressed. The developing pollard head becomes enlarged and knobbly as successive rounds of pruning create a ring of scars around the cutting point. Old pollard trees can develop characteristically bulbous, gnarled heads.

Success depends on timing and follow-up. Cuts made in late summer can invite fungal infection if the wound does not seal before winter. Young trees must establish a strong framework before pollarding begins, usually 3 to 5 years after planting. Neglected pollards, left uncut for many years, can develop dangerously heavy branch structure and cavities in the enlarged head; regular cutting maintains structural integrity and rejuvenates the canopy.

The economics of pollarding have shifted markedly. In mechanized agriculture and where fossil fuels replaced wood fuel, the practice largely disappeared in northern Europe except on conservation sites, in hedgerows, and among heritage tree populations. In developing regions, particularly in Africa and South Asia, pollarding remains important for fuel, fodder, and soil conservation. Arborists now recognize pollard restoration as a specialist skill, especially on historic trees where improper cutting leads to cavity formation and decay.
