pot

A simple electromechanical device used to control resistance or voltage (often to adjust sound volume) in an electronic device by rotating or sliding when manipulated by a human thumb, screwdriver, etc.

pot: the dial that changes resistance by turning

A pot is a variable resistor packaged as a potentiometer, the workhorse control element in audio equipment, amplifiers, and any circuit that needs adjustable voltage or current. Inside is a resistive element, usually a carbon film or wire wound onto a ceramic core, with a wiper that slides across it as you turn the shaft. The resistance changes smoothly from near zero to its maximum rated value, typically measured in kilohms (1k, 10k, 100k). Rotating the pot moves the wiper; current flows through only the portion of the element between the wiper and one end, so you get continuous control, not discrete steps.

Pots come in two main mechanical types: rotary (most common, with a shaft you turn through typically 270 degrees) and linear slider. The resistive track itself varies in design. Carbon composition pots are cheap and noisy but reliable in non-critical applications. Carbon film pots offer smoother operation and lower noise. Wire-wound pots give better precision and power handling but have a coarser resolution since the resistive wire itself is a fixed thickness. Audio taper pots have a logarithmic resistance curve that matches human hearing, so volume sounds smooth across the whole range; linear taper is used for filter frequencies and other non-audio controls.

The name comes from potentiometer, a laboratory instrument for measuring potential difference. In shop talk, almost no one calls it by the full name. A pot fails in a few predictable ways: the wiper loses contact as the carbon film or wire wears, causing crackling or dead spots as you turn it; corrosion attacks the terminals or track if exposed to moisture or salt air; the shaft can snap from mechanical stress. High-end audio designers replace pots with motorised equivalents or digital volume control specifically to avoid this wear and the noise it introduces.

In guitar amplifiers, a pot controls preamp gain, tone stack frequency, and output level. In mixing consoles, each channel has pots for level and EQ. Industrial equipment uses pots for motor speed control, sensor calibration, and bias adjustment. The 10k audio taper pot is probably the most widely stocked component across studios and repair shops. Tolerance matters: a 100k pot might be rated at plus or minus 20 percent (100k ± 20k), which is acceptable for volume control but unacceptable if you need it to set a precise filter frequency. Precision pots with 1 or 5 percent tolerance cost significantly more.

Dust and debris are the main enemy in live use. A spray of electrical contact cleaner into the sides of a pot can restore function to a crackling control without needing replacement. However, if the wiper itself is damaged or the track is worn through to the substrate, cleaning will not help; the pot must be swapped. Always desoldering a pot from a live circuit requires identifying its pinout: typically three lugs, two at the ends of the resistive element and one connected to the wiper. Shorting pins while desoldering or applying excessive heat will destroy it.
