pot life: how long you have before the mix hardens
Pot life is the window of working time available after you mix a reactive material with a catalyst or hardener before the mixture becomes too viscous or sets completely. In polyester resin, epoxy adhesive, polyurethane foam, or two-part concrete sealers, you add the reactive component and then you have a fixed span, sometimes minutes, sometimes hours, to apply, spread, or process the material before it hardens beyond usefulness.
The clock starts the moment you combine the components. Temperature accelerates the process dramatically. A two-part epoxy rated for 30 minutes pot life at 20°C may gel in 10 minutes at 35°C. Conversely, cooling the mixed material or the substrate extends pot life, which is why installers working with quick-set adhesives sometimes refrigerate their supplies or spray the surface with water to buy time on hot days.
Pot life differs from gel time and cure time. Gel time is when the mixture first becomes too thick to work; you may still have a few minutes after gelation to shape or smooth the material. Full cure time, which can be 24 hours or a week, is when the material reaches its final strength. Pot life is about suitability for application, not chemical completion.
Common variations and what shortens pot life
Polyester resins and polyurethane systems designed for speed typically offer 5 to 15 minutes of pot life; epoxies for structural bonding range from 10 minutes to several hours depending on formulation. Adding more catalyst always shortens pot life, a tactic used when site conditions or job demands require faster setting. Mixing batches larger than recommended can also shorten pot life because the exothermic reaction releases heat and accelerates hardening, especially in the center of the batch.
Losing pot life means wasted material. Once a two-part material starts to gel, it cannot be reworked or re-applied; it must be discarded. Professional installers calculate batch sizes based on how much area they can cover before gelation, and they keep tools and containers at room temperature to prevent premature hardening. Understanding pot life for your specific product, by reading the technical datasheet, not guessing, is essential to avoiding waste and achieving proper bonding or surface coverage.
