probe

A tube attached to an aircraft which can be fitted into the drogue from a tanker aircraft to allow for aerial refuelling.

A probe is a rigid or semi-rigid tube mounted on the fuselage or wing of a receiver aircraft, designed to penetrate the basket or drogue trailed by a tanker aircraft during in-flight refueling. The probe extends several feet from the airframe, typically 3 to 6 feet depending on aircraft type, and must align with the drogue opening while both aircraft maintain formation at speeds between 250 and 350 knots. Once seated, fuel flows through the probe into the aircraft's fuel system via a one-way check valve.

Probes vary significantly by aircraft type and mission profile. Fighter jets like the F-16 and F/A-18 use fixed or articulated probes mounted on the nose or fuselage; large transport aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules mount them on the wing or fuselage. Some probes feature spring-loaded receptacles to cushion contact with the drogue basket, while others rely on rigid alignment. Probe materials are typically aluminum alloy or composite, selected to withstand turbulence, thermal cycling, and repeated engagement cycles. Fuel lines within the probe are stainless steel or compatible elastomer hose.

Common failure modes and inspection points

Probes suffer fatigue cracking at the mounting bracket due to vibration and cyclic bending loads, especially during rough air or missed basket approaches. Corrosion develops where moisture enters the probe interior after failed refueling attempts. Fuel valve stiction can prevent flow after extended storage. During maintenance, inspectors examine the probe for dents, cracks, leakage, and proper alignment relative to the drogue basket position; misalignment of more than a few degrees can prevent engagement. Pressure testing verifies the internal check valve seats properly and fuel lines contain no leaks.

The term "probe" derives from its function as a pointed or protruding sensing device that probes into a target. In the refueling context it echoes the broader engineering use of probe for any external sensor or access point. Older terminology sometimes called the probe a "boom receptacle" when paired with the boom-type refueling method used by cargo aircraft, but the probe-and-drogue configuration is now dominant in tactical aviation. The drogue itself, a funnel-shaped basket or cone, hangs from the tanker's hose reel and provides the target for probe insertion.

Probe design is aircraft-specific and cannot be interchanged between different models. Maintenance records must track probe cycles, inspections, and any collision or corrosion events, as repeated impact or environmental exposure degrades structural integrity. Ground personnel verify probe condition before flight, and flight crews conduct functional checks of the refueling system, including pressure readings and valve response, before attempting tanker contact.
