PSTN: the old copper grid that still carries your calls
The public switched telephone network is the global infrastructure of circuit-switched lines that has carried voice calls since the early 1900s. It operates by establishing a dedicated electrical circuit between two endpoints for the duration of a call, physically routing the connection through exchanges and trunk lines rather than breaking the signal into data packets. Despite being largely replaced by IP-based systems in developed nations, the PSTN remains fundamental to telecommunications: it is circuit-switched, real-time, and carries not only voice but also fax, modems, and alarm signals.
The network consists of local loops (the copper or fiber pairs running to individual premises), local exchanges where calls are routed to regional switching centers, and long-distance trunk lines connecting major cities. Historically dominated by twisted-pair copper wiring, the PSTN has been progressively upgraded with fiber optic trunk routes and digital switching equipment. However, the final mile to most residential and small business customers still relies on the original copper plant installed decades ago.
The shift away, and what remains
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and mobile networks now handle the majority of new call traffic in developed countries, but the PSTN persists because a vast installed base of equipment, devices, and users depend on it. Telephone exchanges that were built in the 1980s are still in service. Decommissioning the PSTN entirely requires coordinating with millions of users and replacing critical infrastructure such as fire alarm systems, elevator phones, and credit card terminals that expect dialtone on a physical line.
Practical problems arise in the transition period. Legacy PBX systems, fax machines, and older modems operate only on the PSTN; calls to these devices fail if routed purely over IP networks. Analog telephone adapters (ATAs) can bridge the gap but introduce latency and reliability trade-offs. Many countries have set official sunset dates for PSTN services (several European operators and North America's carriers have announced timelines in the 2020s and 2030s), but the timeline remains long because wholesale replacement of the copper plant is capital-intensive and logistically complex.
The term PSTN is now largely historical shorthand in the industry. Engineers and operators distinguish between legacy circuit-switched access and modern packet-switched alternatives, but the acronym persists in regulatory documents, interoperability standards (like SIP trunking), and discussions of network convergence. Understanding the PSTN matters because decommissioning decisions, network resilience standards, and emergency services architecture still revolve around its presence and eventual retirement.
