PSU: the box that turns wall current into what your equipment actually needs
A power supply unit converts incoming alternating current (AC) from the mains into direct current (DC) at the voltage and amperage your equipment requires. It sits between the wall socket and your load, stepping voltage down (or occasionally up), filtering noise, and protecting downstream circuits from spikes and surges. Most industrial PSUs handle 100 to 240 volts AC input and output anything from 3.3 volts to 48 volts DC, though specialized units exist for both lower and higher voltages.
The core of any PSU is a transformer that reduces AC voltage to a usable level, followed by a rectifier that converts it to DC, then filter capacitors that smooth the output ripple to acceptable levels. Linear PSUs use a series pass transistor to regulate voltage; they run hot and are bulky but tolerate electrical noise well. Switching PSUs use high-frequency pulse-width modulation to regulate output; they are compact and efficient but can themselves inject switching noise into sensitive circuits. Many modern industrial PSUs are switching designs rated for 80 Plus Bronze or higher efficiency, meaning they waste less than 20 percent of input power as heat.
Reliability and protection
Industrial PSUs must survive harsh conditions: thermal stress from repeated startup and shutdown cycles, input voltage fluctuations, short circuits on the output rails, and vibration in machinery enclosures. Quality units include thermal cutoff, current limiting, and sometimes redundant or parallel-capable designs so one unit can back up another. A failed PSU often fails in a safe mode: the output goes to zero rather than floating or delivering full voltage unregulated.
The choice between linear and switching PSUs hinges on the application. A programmable logic controller or data acquisition system in a clean, temperature-controlled cabinet may use a compact switching supply. A sensitive analog circuit or radio frequency equipment near a PSU might need a linear supply or careful shielding to avoid noise coupling through the power rails. Failure rates increase sharply above 40 degrees Celsius, so thermal management and derating are practical concerns in hot manufacturing environments.
Terminology can blur: industrial practitioners sometimes call a wall-mounted AC-DC converter a PSU, and sometimes reserve the term for larger rack-mount or DIN-rail units with regulated outputs. Cheap unregulated wall adapters that just drop and rectify voltage are rarely called PSUs in professional contexts. The term encompasses everything from a five-watt embedded supply inside a sensor to a 2000-watt industrial power distribution unit feeding a servo drive cabinet.
