pull out: recovering an aircraft from a dive

A pull out is the control input and resulting aircraft motion that terminates a dive and returns the machine to level flight or a climbing attitude. The pilot increases pitch by drawing back on the control column (or equivalent), generating additional lift on the wing surfaces until the descent is arrested and the nose rises above the horizon. This is a fundamental recovery maneuver, not an optional technique.

The severity of a pull out depends on dive angle and airspeed at the moment of recovery. A shallow dive at modest speed demands gentle control input; a steep dive at high velocity requires more aggressive pitch change, and the aircraft experiences higher g-loading as the wing generates the increased lift needed to change flight path. Recovery in a 60-degree dive at cruise speed will typically produce 3 to 4 g in a general aviation aircraft. Structural limits exist for all aircraft, and exceeding them during pull out can cause permanent deformation or failure of wing and fuselage components.

Why pull outs matter in maintenance

Maintenance personnel inspect for damage after inadvertent dives or training maneuvers that result in hard pull outs. Areas of concern include wing roots, fuselage longerons, and control surface hinges, where fatigue cracking can initiate if repeated high-g pull outs occur. Inspection methods include visual examination under strong lighting, borescope inspection of internal structures where accessible, and in some cases eddy current or ultrasonic testing to detect subsurface cracking.

The term pull out also appears in engine maintenance: when an engine is removed from an aircraft for overhaul or replacement, the process is sometimes called a "pull out," though "removal" or "swap" are more common in current usage. In this context, the phrase refers to the mechanical extraction of the powerplant from its mounts and disconnect of fuel, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
