A pulley-plough is a plowing system in which a stationary steam engine or winch anchored at the field's edge pulls a plow across the ground via a rope or cable wound through a system of pulleys. Unlike a locomotive-style plowing engine that moves under its own power, the stationary engine remains fixed at one location, hauling the plow back and forth across parallel runs. The mechanical advantage of the pulley system allows smaller or lighter equipment to work heavy soils that would otherwise require enormous draft force from horses or a large self-propelled engine.

The system works in alternating passes. A rope or steel cable runs from the winch, over pulleys mounted on a frame at the far end of the field or held by an assistant operator, and attaches to the plow. As the engine winds the cable, the plow is drawn toward it; a second rope then hauls the plow back for the return pass, with the operator angling it slightly to create the next furrow line. Pulley-ploughs were particularly common in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Europe and Australia, on farms too large for horse teams but in regions where steam engines were more practical than locomotive plows.

Variants and limitations

A simpler horse-drawn version exists, using a fixed pulley arrangement between two horse teams or a single team positioned to create mechanical advantage, though this is less common. The system's major weakness is its immobility: moving the anchor point, cable, and pulleys to a new field section is labor-intensive, making it slow for small plots. Cable stretch, pulley wear, and the constant tension in wet or clay soils also demand frequent adjustment. On slopes, the uneven draft and cable angle create uneven plowing depth.

The name derives directly from its core components: the pulley (a wheel with a grooved rim for rope) provides the mechanical advantage, and the plough is the plow itself. The term is most firmly established in British and Commonwealth agricultural vocabulary, where the spelling 'plough' persists. The pulley-plough occupies a middle ground in farm mechanization history, obsolete almost everywhere by the 1950s as single-engine self-propelled plows became affordable and the cable-based system proved too cumbersome for changing field conditions.
