pulpit

The railing at the bow of a boat, which sometimes extends past the deck; also called bow pulpit. The railing at the stern is sometimes called the stern pulpit or the pushpit.

A pulpit is a welded or bolted tubular metal framework that extends beyond the hull at the bow or stern of a boat, serving as both safety rail and structural attachment point. The bow pulpit, also called a bow rail or stemhead fitting, projects forward from the deck edge and typically stands 36 to 48 inches above the deck. The stern version, commonly termed a pushpit (a portmanteau of "push" and "pulpit"), performs the same function at the aft end. Both are standard fittings on cruising sailboats and motor yachts, where crew members frequently work near the boat's ends during docking, anchoring, and sail handling.

The pulpit serves dual purposes: it provides a handhold and fall protection for crew moving forward or aft along the deck, and it anchors the upper end of the lifelines that run the perimeter of the boat. These stainless steel cables or lines thread through stanchions and connect to the pulpit framework, forming a continuous safety barrier. The pulpit also acts as a structural component, with its legs bolted or welded directly to the deck or hull structure, distributing loads from the lifelines and crew weight across a larger area than a single post could manage.

Construction and Variants

Most pulpits are fabricated from type 316 stainless steel tubing, typically 1 to 1.25 inches in diameter, welded into a frame that matches the boat's beam. The bow pulpit often includes a horizontal rail or "pulpit guard" that extends further forward, protecting against snagging lines and providing additional handholds. On larger vessels, the bow pulpit may incorporate a boarding gate or removable section to allow passage of anchors and ground tackle. Pushpits on sailboats frequently mount a stern pulpit rail or transom gate, often hinged to permit boarding from a dinghy or permit trailing lines.

Corrosion is the primary failure mode, occurring where dissimilar metals contact the pulpit (such as aluminum stanchion bases or steel fasteners), even in stainless steel fittings. Crevice corrosion appears at bolted joints and welds if they are not kept clean and sealed. Structural failure can result from impact damage during docking or from fatigue cracking at welded joints, especially on vessels operated in rough conditions where the crew exerts repeated dynamic loading on the rails. Loose fasteners often develop at the deck penetrations where the pulpit legs mount.

The term pulpit derives from the ecclesiastical pulpit, a raised platform from which speakers address an audience. The nautical pulpit shares the elevated, exposed quality; sailors must stand at the bow pulpit much as a preacher stands in a pulpit, visible and isolated. The stern variant's name, pushpit, emerged from the colloquial humor of boating communities, referring to the common practice of using the stern rail as a handhold when pushing a boat off the dock or reversing into a slip. Both names are now standard terminology in yards, marina catalogs, and insurance classifications for deck gear.
