A vehicle that is traveling on a leg of its route in which it does not carry any cargo.

deadleg: an empty journey that still costs money

A deadleg is a voyage or transit segment during which a vessel, truck, or other transport unit travels without carrying paying cargo. In marine operations, this typically describes the return journey after discharging cargo at a destination, or a repositioning voyage to reach a loading port. The term applies equally to land transport: a truck rolling back to a distribution center empty after delivery, or a barge being towed upstream with no load. The cost of fuel, crew wages, wear, and port fees remains constant whether the unit carries cargo or travels empty.

In shipping, deadlegs are often unavoidable and built into the economics of a route. A vessel that loads grain in the US Gulf and discharges in Rotterdam will typically deadleg back across the Atlantic or accept a backhaul cargo at a reduced rate. The duration and distance of a deadleg directly affect the break-even freight rate needed to make the loaded leg profitable. Efficient operators minimize deadlegs by networking with freight brokers, shipper cooperatives, or competing carriers to secure return loads, even at marginal margins.

For smaller operators, deadlegs represent pure loss. A pick-and-pack courier or small trucking firm that delivers in one direction with no return cargo must either negotiate a higher rate on the loaded leg to absorb the empty return, or position vehicles and crews inefficiently. Container shipping companies measure deadleg distance as part of their utilization metrics; modern scheduling software attempts to balance loaded and empty repositioning to maintain fleet efficiency above 85 percent.

The term carries no judgment, only economics. A deadleg is not a failure or mistake; it is a structural reality of most transport networks. However, industries obsessed with asset utilization, such as container trucking or intermodal logistics, treat deadlegs as the enemy and invest heavily in load-matching technology, dedicated reverse logistics networks, or regional consolidation hubs specifically to eliminate empty miles. In rail, deadlegs are formalized: empty cars are moved back at night or during off-peak periods at minimal tracking cost.
