Quadragesimo-octavo, or 48mo, is a book size produced by folding a single sheet of paper forty-eight times. The result is one of the smallest practical book formats, typically measuring between 2.5 and 3.1 inches in width and 2.5 to 3.3 inches in height, depending on the parent sheet size and exact folding method. Books in this format contain 96 leaves per quire, making them extraordinarily compact objects suited to reference works, prayer books, miniature editions, and specialty printing.

The term comes from the Latin system of naming book sizes by the number of leaves created from a single fold. A folio has 2 leaves; a quarto has 4; an octavo has 8. Each doubling of the leaf count adds another fold, following the geometric pattern. Quadragesimo-octavo sits at the extreme end of this scale and is rarely encountered in modern commercial printing. Historical examples include 18th and 19th century pocket bibles and miniature reference dictionaries, where the format offered practical portability before digital alternatives existed.

Producing 48mo books presents serious technical challenges. The nested folds must be precisely aligned; any deviation compounds across forty-eight layers. Cutting the folded block to open all leaves cleanly requires sharp equipment and careful positioning. Paper must be thin enough that the finished book remains manageable in thickness, yet sturdy enough to withstand folding and handling without cracking. Pressure and moisture control during binding become critical because the finished spine is narrow and the text block is dense.

Today, 48mo appears mainly in limited-edition and specialty publishing rather than trade printing. Modern printers more commonly produce formats down to 32mo or 16mo for miniature books. When quadragesimo-octavo does appear, it is typically as a deliberate design choice for novelty or historical reproduction, not as a practical economy. The format sits in a niche between standard book production and the hand-bound miniature book trade that operates under different technical and commercial rules.
