A quarry is an excavated site where stone is extracted directly from bedrock or overburden by mechanical or explosive means. Unlike underground mines, quarries operate at or near surface level, with faces that may extend dozens of meters deep. The stone, limestone, granite, slate, sandstone, basalt, or dimension stone, is removed in blocks or as aggregate for construction, industrial use, or processing into finished products.

Most quarries begin with drilling and blasting to fracture the rock mass, followed by loading broken stone into haul trucks or onto conveyor systems. Smaller operations may use wire saws or diamond tools to extract dimension stone more carefully, preserving larger blocks for splitting or finishing. Primary crushing equipment, such as jaw crushers or impact mills, often sits adjacent to the quarry face to reduce material to customer specifications before dispatch.

Working conditions and constraints

Quarry operators must manage slope stability, water accumulation, and dust suppression. Face angles and bench heights are designed to prevent rockfall; typical benches are 5 to 20 meters high with setbacks of 1 to 3 meters. Groundwater pumping is routine in wet seasons. Noise, vibration, and air quality near blast zones require monitoring and control, often regulated by local authority.

The term derives from the Latin quadrare, meaning to square or shape, reflecting the intentional breaking of stone into useful form. Quarrying is distinct from mining: it produces bulk inert material rather than ore, and environmental restoration is typically less complex than for metal mines, though still required by law in most jurisdictions.
