In hard rock mining, a fang is a deliberate air channel, either cut directly into rock or installed as rigid pipe, that forces fresh air down to miners working far below the surface. The term is particularly common in South African and Australian mining regions. As depths exceed 500 metres, natural ventilation fails entirely; a fang becomes essential infrastructure for survival, delivering cooler surface air to pit bottoms and working faces where heat stress and carbon dioxide accumulation would otherwise make labour impossible.

Fangs are typically square or rectangular in cross-section when cut into rock, measuring anything from 300 mm to 600 mm on each side. When installed as pipe systems, they are usually mild steel or sometimes cast iron, with diameters ranging from 200 mm to 800 mm. The fang runs vertically or near-vertically from surface down the main shaft, often alongside the main hoisting shaft but separated from it. Air is forced down either by large surface fans (often 30 to 50 kilowatts or more) or by natural draft if the mine layout permits.

Friction and maintenance trouble spots

Air moving rapidly through a long fang experiences significant friction losses; a 1000 metre fang can lose 40 to 60 percent of its pressure head by the bottom. Scaling (mineral deposits), dust accumulation, and structural misalignment all reduce airflow further. In wet mines, water pooling in low sections corrodes steel fangs and restricts the bore. Regular cleaning, inspection for holes and rust, and balancing the surface fan are essential maintenance tasks; neglect leads directly to inadequate face ventilation and heat-related incidents.

The distinction between a fang and a general mine ventilation shaft matters operationally. A fang is a dedicated supply channel; return air travels up through the main shaft or separate upcast shafts. In some older shallow workings or stone mines, a natural draft fang may exist where cool air descends on one side of a shaft simply because it is denser than the warmed air rising on the other. These require no fan power but offer minimal control and flow.

The word fang itself (from Afrikaans or Dutch mining vocabulary) has not been widely standardized in English mining manuals, which prefer terms like downcomer or supply duct. Regional terminology persists in longwall and deep hard rock operations where the word has historical currency among shift workers and engineers. Understanding whether your mine calls this installation a fang, a downcast, or a supply shaft matters for communication with site teams and for reading older geological or engineering records from that region.
