Radium is a lightweight fabric woven from continuous filament yarn, typically silk or acetate, finished to produce a characteristic high gloss. The weave itself is plain or taffeta-based, but the sheen comes from the yarn twist and a final calendering process that compresses the surface fibers. The result is a stiff, crisp hand with pronounced light reflection, making it visually distinct from duller fabrics like cotton sateen.

The name dates to early twentieth-century textile marketing, when radium was a fashionable element associated with modernity and luminescence. Manufacturers used the term to suggest the fabric's bright, glowing appearance under light. This was purely a marketing choice; the fabric contains no radioactive material. The term persisted in the textile trade long after radium itself fell from popular culture, and it remains in use among older mills and in historical textile documentation.

Production and variants

Traditional radium used long-staple silk or high-twist acetate filament. The weave count is tight, usually 80 to 120 picks per inch, creating a smooth, uniform surface. Finishing involves singeing to remove surface fuzz, then calendering under heat and pressure. Synthetic versions using polyester became common after the 1950s, offering better durability and lower cost. Some radiums incorporate a warp-faced construction to intensify the sheen in one direction.

The fabric was popular in mid-century garment manufacturing for eveningwear, blouses, and decorative linings because of its drape, body, and visual impact. It requires careful pressing; excessive heat can flatten or damage the finish. Radium fades under prolonged sunlight and can yellow with age. It is also prone to pilling if the filament lacks sufficient twist, and the stiff hand makes it unsuitable for garments requiring softness or flexibility.

Today radium appears mainly in heritage textile production and restoration, particularly in vintage clothing and period costume work. It has largely been replaced by modern acetate and polyester fabrics with engineered finishes that offer better performance and lower labor costs. However, traditional silk radium remains valued for its authentic appearance in high-end reproduction garments and specialty applications where hand and sheen matter more than price.
