A rail anchor is a sprung metal fastening that clamps down on the sleeper (or tie) beneath a rail, preventing the rail from creeping forward or backward along the track due to thermal expansion, braking forces, or traction. It works by bearing pressure against the sides of the sleeper through spring tension, holding the rail's baseplate in fixed longitudinal position. Without anchors, rails would gradually shift under load, causing misalignment, weakened joints, and dangerous gaps.
Rail anchors are typically fabricated from spring steel, often hardened to around 45-50 HRC. The clip straddles the sleeper on both sides, with legs that press inward and downward when the rail is laid. The amount of clamping force depends on the spring rate and the depth of the clip; common designs exert 5 to 10 kilonewtons of holding force. They must resist corrosion in wet ballast environments, so many are galvanized or painted with weatherproof coatings.
Placement and variants
Anchors are installed at intervals of 6 to 10 sleepers along the track, with more frequent placement on steep grades, at switches, and near stations where trains accelerate or brake heavily. Single-leg anchors grip only one side of the sleeper, while double-leg designs (the more common type) engage both sides for greater holding power. Some designs incorporate a rubber or elastomer pad to reduce noise and distribute pressure more evenly.The term 'anchor' reflects the device's primary function: it anchors the rail in place rather than allowing it to float or shift. The spring clip design allows the rail to expand and contract with temperature changes without losing grip; a rigid anchor would crack under thermal stress. Over time, anchors can work loose as the sleeper compresses, especially in timber sleepers, and periodic retensioning is part of track maintenance.
Rail anchors are distinct from fastening systems like Pandrol clips or spring-loaded pads, which clamp the rail down onto the sleeper. Anchors work laterally, preventing side-to-side and lengthwise movement rather than vertical lift-off. On modern continuously welded rail (CWR), proper anchor spacing is critical because the long unbroken rail is more prone to creeping under thermal and dynamic forces than jointed rail.
