A ramline is a taut cord or thread stretched along the centerline of a vessel's hull during construction and finishing. It runs from stem to stern, establishing the longitudinal axis against which all lateral measurements and alignments are checked. The term comes from naval construction practice, where maintaining perfect symmetry along this critical axis determines whether a hull will track true in the water and sit level on the keel.
The ramline serves as a visual and tactile reference for shipwrights and fitters. Before modern laser instruments, it was the most reliable way to verify that frames were set perpendicular to the keel, that planking was fair, and that structural components sat symmetrically on both sides of the vessel. A taut ramline made from linen, hemp, or modern synthetic cord is secured at both ends of the hull, typically at the stem and sternpost, and checked at regular intervals along the length to catch any twisting or lateral drift in the structure.
The ramline works in conjunction with other layout references, particularly the ribband (a flexible batten that marks the curve of the hull) and the sheerline (which defines the upper profile). Together, these references keep the hull fair, meaning free from unwanted bumps, hollows, or asymmetries. A ramline under tension cannot lie; any deviation in the hull structure becomes immediately obvious when measured against it.
Modern boatbuilding has not eliminated the ramline, though it now competes with laser levels and digital measurement systems. For wooden vessels, traditional methods remain common, and even in composite and metal construction, a ramline provides a quick, mechanical sanity check. A ramline can reveal frame deflection, keel twist, or misalignment of major components that might be missed by point measurements alone.
