regen: energy recovery when you lift off the throttle

Regen is the capture and storage of kinetic energy that would otherwise be wasted as heat during braking or coasting. In electric and hybrid vehicles, the electric motor reverses its role to become a generator, converting the vehicle's momentum back into electrical charge that tops up the battery pack. On a typical EV, regen can recover 5 to 15 percent of energy lost in city driving, where frequent deceleration is the norm.

The system works most efficiently at moderate deceleration rates, roughly 0.1 to 0.3 g. Hard braking, where friction brakes dominate, cannot regen effectively because the motor cannot spin fast enough to absorb all that energy. Conversely, very gentle coasting produces minimal recovery. The control module blends hydraulic friction braking with motor braking to optimize energy recapture while maintaining smooth stopping feel and preventing battery overcharge.

Where regen fits in the drivetrain

Regen operates most smoothly in single-motor vehicles with a direct mechanical link between motor and wheels. All-wheel-drive EVs with independent motors on each axle can regen each side separately, enabling torque vectoring and improved stability. The recovered energy flows through the onboard charger into the battery's management system, which monitors cell voltage and temperature to prevent damage from rapid charging.

Battery chemistry and state-of-charge affect regen performance. Lithium-ion packs accept regen well when warm and partially charged; they resist it when cold or fully charged, forcing the vehicle to rely on friction brakes alone. Some vehicles reduce regen power automatically in winter or at high battery state-of-charge to protect cell longevity. The term regen braking is more formal; regen is the working shorthand across the EV industry.
