An econometer is a dashboard instrument that displays instantaneous or average fuel consumption, allowing drivers to monitor how efficiently their vehicle is using fuel during operation. Unlike a fuel gauge, which shows remaining tank volume, an econometer calculates consumption in units such as litres per 100 kilometres, miles per gallon, or kilometres per litre, updating continuously as the engine runs.

Most econometers operate by comparing fuel flow data from the engine control unit with vehicle speed. The fuel injector pulse width, measured in milliseconds, correlates directly to fuel volume delivered; the ECU divides this by distance travelled to produce consumption figures. Digital econometers became standard on many vehicles from the 1980s onward, initially showing average consumption over a trip, then evolving to display instantaneous consumption alongside trip averages.

The instrument serves a practical function: drivers who monitor fuel consumption actively tend to adopt smoother acceleration, maintain steadier speeds, and reduce idle time, typically improving overall efficiency by 5 to 15 percent. On vehicles with manual transmissions, the econometer provides immediate feedback on gear selection and engine load, making it particularly useful for training drivers toward economical operation.

Limitations and variants

Econometer accuracy depends entirely on calibration of the fuel flow sensor and speed input. A worn fuel injector that leaks slightly, a faulty mass airflow sensor, or mismatched wheel diameter data will all introduce errors into the calculation. Some vehicles offer separate displays: one showing consumption over the last few seconds and another averaged over the journey, since instantaneous figures fluctuate wildly during acceleration and braking.

The term itself combines economy with meter, describing its dual purpose: measuring and encouraging efficient fuel use. In markets where fuel cost and emissions regulations drive fleet management, econometer data is sometimes logged and analysed to identify driver behaviour patterns and maintenance issues such as fouled spark plugs or mis-set ignition timing that degrade efficiency.
