rep

A fabric made of silk or wool, or of silk and wool, and having a transversely corded or ribbed surface.

Rep is a woven fabric distinguished by its prominent transverse ribs or cords that run across the width of the cloth, perpendicular to the selvage. These ribs are produced by using weft threads thicker than the warp, or by using a warp that is much finer and denser than the weft. The result is a fabric with a distinctly ridged surface texture, where the heavier threads dominate the face of the cloth. Traditional rep uses silk or wool fibers, or a blend of both, though the construction method has been adapted to other fiber types in modern production.

The term "rep" likely derives from the French "reps," and the fabric's ribbed structure is sometimes called repp or rep weave interchangeably. The size and prominence of the cords vary depending on the yarn weights and thread counts used. Finer reps, where the ribs are small and closely spaced, have a smoother hand and drape better than coarser varieties. Heavier reps with bold ribs are stiffer and more suitable for upholstery and furnishing applications where structure and durability matter more than flexibility.

Rep has long been valued for furnishings, decorative fabrics, and garment materials where a textured surface adds visual interest and tactile quality. The crosswise ribbing creates a fabric that is naturally stiff in the cross direction, which makes rep effective for holding shape in tailored garments and drapery. The prominent ribs can catch and hold light differently depending on viewing angle, giving the fabric subtle luster and depth even in solid colors. This property has made rep a staple choice for formal upholstery and architectural textile applications.

Construction challenges and performance

Weaving rep requires careful control of yarn tension and sizing, since the disparity between warp and weft thread weights can cause the fabric to pucker or become uneven if not managed properly. The heavier weft threads can be prone to breaking during the weaving process, particularly if the loom speed is too high or if the thread diameter varies. Finishing rep also presents difficulties: the fabric must be dried and pressed to even out the ribs without crushing them flat, a balance that affects the final appearance and hand of the cloth.

In modern textile production, rep construction is less common than it once was, partly due to the decline of traditional fine weaving and the shift toward other surface-texture techniques like pile weaves and jacquards. However, rep fabrics remain in demand for heritage furnishings, formal suiting, and specialty applications where the specific handle and appearance of the rib structure is desired. Quality reps in wool or silk still command premium prices and are often made in smaller mills with slower looms capable of producing the even tension required.
