reoperate: restart a stopped machine or process

To reoperate means to bring a machine, production line, or industrial process back into active operation after it has been shut down, whether deliberately or due to failure. This is routine work in manufacturing, but it carries real risks if the machine has not been properly prepared or if conditions have changed since shutdown.

Reoperation typically follows planned maintenance, emergency repair, or an unplanned stop caused by equipment fault or safety incident. Before reoperating, technicians must verify that all guards are in place, that moving parts are free of obstruction or tools, that hydraulic or pneumatic systems have returned to safe pressure levels, and that electrical interlocks are functioning. The specific checklist depends on the machine type and the reason for the shutdown.

Common failure modes during reoperation

Many industrial accidents occur in the minutes after a machine is restarted. Trapped coolant or hydraulic fluid may have caused swelling in seals; a component installed during maintenance may not be fully tightened; or someone may have left a wrench, rag, or part inside the work envelope. Cold oil in winter can cause sluggish movement that operators mistake for a fault. Starting under load when the machine was shut down under no-load conditions can shock bearings and belts. Proper lockout and verification procedures exist precisely to prevent these events, but they are sometimes bypassed under pressure to restore production quickly.

The term itself is straightforward: it is the opposite of "operate" in the sense that it restores operation rather than initiating it from cold. In some industries, particularly in process plants and continuous manufacturing, machines may run for weeks or months without stopping, so reoperation after maintenance is a high-stakes event. In batch manufacturing or job shops, reoperation happens several times per shift and is treated as routine, which can breed carelessness.

Documentation of reoperation conditions is often important for warranty claims, quality investigations, and safety audits. Recording the date, time, operator, maintenance performed, and any anomalies observed during startup protects both the worker and the facility in case of subsequent failure or product defect.
