A reperforator is an electromechanical device that receives incoming telegraph signals, decodes them in real time, and punches a duplicate paper tape with the same message encoded as holes. The tape can then be fed into a transmitter to send the message onward without requiring manual re-keying. This was essential infrastructure for telegraph relay stations, where messages had to pass through multiple nodes across long distances.
The machine combines two functions in one unit: a receiver that captures the incoming signal (typically a solenoid responding to Morse code or a similar signal) and a punch mechanism that drives a stylus or set of pins through paper at precise moments. The paper tape itself uses a standard format, usually five or eight channels of holes, arranged in rows. Each row represents one character. The punch operates synchronously with an internal clock or a signal derived from the incoming transmission, ensuring the spacing and timing of holes matches the incoming data.
Operation and Variants
A reperforator runs continuously at a fixed tape speed, typically between 40 and 200 characters per minute depending on the system. Operators had to thread the blank tape correctly and monitor the mechanism to watch for jams or misalignment. Some designs used a solenoid to push a pin through the paper; others used a heated stylus that burned holes into sensitized tape. The most common arrangement punched directly through paper tape onto a backing plate. Different telegraph codes required different punch configurations, so machines were often specialized for Baudot code or other standards in use at that station.
The reperforator solved a real operational problem: telegraph operators working a relay station were exhausted by copying incoming messages by hand and then re-keying them for outward transmission. Errors crept in, especially on high-traffic routes or during poor signal conditions. An automated tape meant the message was captured once, verified once, and retransmitted with high fidelity. It also allowed a single operator to handle more traffic by letting the machine do the copying work.
The reperforator became obsolete with the rise of automated switching and digital transmission. Once telephone networks and later packet-switched data networks replaced telegraph, the need to manually relay and retransmit messages disappeared. However, the technology influenced later automated systems and set a precedent for punched-tape data handling in early computing.
