reseda: a fragrant flower crop grown for essential oil
Reseda odorata, commonly called mignonette or reseda, is a low-growing annual herb cultivated commercially for the volatile compounds in its flowers. The plant reaches 30 to 60 centimetres in height and produces dense spikes of small, greenish-white flowers with a distinctive, sweet fragrance that intensifies in warm weather. Commercial growers harvest the flower heads at peak bloom to extract essential oil, which contains primarily methyl heptenone and other volatile esters used in perfumery and flavouring.
Field cultivation follows standard vegetable and ornamental protocols. Seeds are sown directly into prepared beds in spring after frost risk passes; germination occurs within 7 to 10 days at soil temperatures above 15 degrees Celsius. Plants require moderate moisture and well-draining soil with moderate fertility. Flowering begins 8 to 10 weeks after sowing and continues through summer if deadheaded to prevent seed set. The crop matures unevenly, with successive harvests required over 4 to 6 weeks as new flower spikes develop.
Essential oil extraction uses either steam distillation or solvent extraction, depending on end-use quality and cost constraints. Steam distillation yields a lighter fragrance fraction suitable for fine perfumery but requires large volumes of fresh flowers to produce small quantities of oil, typically 0.05 to 0.1 percent by weight. Solvent extraction captures a fuller profile but produces a concrete or absolute rather than pure essential oil. The extracted product is pale yellow to amber and volatile; proper storage under cool, dark conditions and inert atmosphere prevents oxidation and flavour loss.
Reseda cultivation declined sharply through the late twentieth century as synthetic fragrance chemistry displaced botanical extraction for most commercial perfumes. Today production is concentrated in a few heritage regions, particularly parts of southern France and North Africa, where growers serve niche markets in natural perfumery and high-end cosmetics. The crop remains labour-intensive at harvest and extraction stages, making it economically viable only for premium-price applications where the distinctive floral note commands margin over synthetic alternatives.
