reticulated: a pattern of interlocking diamonds in stone
Reticulated masonry uses rectangular stones laid in a diagonal grid so their corners meet and form continuous diamond shapes across the face. The term comes from the Latin reticulum, meaning net or mesh, which describes exactly what the pattern resembles. Unlike coursed or random rubble, reticulated work demands careful selection and cutting of stones to fit edge-to-edge with minimal mortar gaps.
The diamonds themselves are formed by the long edges of the stones, which run at 45 degrees to the horizontal. A typical installation might use stones roughly 150 to 300 mm long, though dimensions vary with the scale of the work. The uniform tilt creates a visually rhythmic surface that reads from a distance as a continuous diagonal weave, even when the stones vary in color or texture.
Reticulated work is stronger than it appears. The diagonal lay-up means stress distributes through the stone rather than following mortar joints, and the tight fitting means weather penetration is minimal if the pointing is maintained. However, the pattern demands precision cutting, which increases labor cost and waste significantly compared to random or coursed masonry. Poorly executed reticulation shows visible gaps and failed stones, making poor workmanship obvious.
You will see reticulated masonry most often in decorative facing work on institutional or civic buildings, particularly from the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was fashionable for ashlar facades where the geometric pattern itself added visual interest and conveyed solidity and craft. Modern construction uses it rarely, as solid brick and precast panels have displaced the craft, but restoration work still demands masons who understand the technique.
