retroscopic: lens tilt that angles away from the face
A retroscopic lens is tilted so that its optical axis points upward and away from the wearer's face, the reverse of a pantoscopic tilt. Where a pantoscopic lens angles downward at the bottom (toward the cheeks), a retroscopic lens angles upward. The tilt is measured in degrees from vertical, typically ranging from 2 to 8 degrees in spectacle work.
This geometry is uncommon in everyday eyewear but appears in specialized applications. High-magnification reading lenses, certain progressive designs for extended downward gaze, and some occupational frames use retroscopic tilt to position the optical center correctly relative to the eye's line of sight during sustained near work. It also occurs in legacy spectacle designs and in frames adapted for specific visual tasks where downward viewing is minimal or where the wearer's head posture differs from the norm.
Optical and physical consequences
The retroscopic angle affects several optical properties. It alters the vertex distance, the separation between the back lens surface and the cornea, which changes effective lens power, particularly for higher prescriptions. It also influences prismatic effects at the edges of the lens and can introduce oblique astigmatism if not compensated. The tilt changes which zone of a progressive lens the wearer uses at different gaze angles, so the placement of the intermediate and distance regions shifts upward in the frame.
The term derives from the Latin retro, meaning backward, and the Greek skopeein, to view or look. Pantoscopic comes from panto, all or every direction, reflecting the forward tilt common to most frames. Retroscopic therefore describes the opposite direction. In optics, frame geometry nomenclature is precise because small tilt changes compound optical errors across the lens surface, particularly in high-power or aspheric designs.
