The return is the designated airway through which depleted air flows from the working face toward the mine exit. In any operating mine, fresh air must enter at the intake and stale air must leave through the return. This circulation is not optional: it removes explosive methane gas, carbon dioxide, dust, and heat generated by machinery and personnel. Without a functioning return, these hazards accumulate to dangerous levels within minutes.

Returns are typically the largest diameter airways in a mine because they must accommodate the full volume of air the ventilation system moves. In hard rock mines, returns are often large enough for vehicles to travel through; in coal mines, they may be separate from haulage roads to avoid cross-contamination. The return must be maintained clear of obstacles and leaks, since cracks or breaches cause air to escape before it reaches the exhaust, reducing the system's efficiency and creating dead zones where gas pools.

Return quality and monitoring

Return air quality is monitored for methane concentration, oxygen depletion, and particulate levels. A return sampling point, or return air station, is positioned near the mine exit to measure conditions before air leaves the mine. If methane in the return exceeds regulation limits, ventilation volume must increase or mining operations suspend until the hazard is cleared. Some mines use multiple returns to create parallel circuits, reducing the volume each return must handle and improving safety margins.

The return is named descriptively: it is where the air returns from the working areas. This simple terminology distinguishes it clearly from the intake. Coal miners traditionally called the return the return airways or return path, and the term has carried across to metal and hard rock mining. Misunderstanding the difference between intake and return, or allowing returns to become blocked, has been a factor in ventilation failures that caused fatalities.
