The side of a fabric, often with a more visible color or pattern, that is intended to face outward on a finished project.

In textile production, the right side is the surface of fabric intended to be visible and outward-facing in the finished garment or project. It contrasts with the wrong side, which may show knots, loose threads, duller color, or the back of pile construction. For woven cloth, the right side typically exhibits clearer pattern definition and more saturated color because the weaving process deposits dye and finish compounds preferentially on this face. For knits, it shows the smooth 'V' formations of correctly faced loops rather than the bumpy reverse.
Determining right from wrong side is not always obvious. In plain, reversible fabrics like linen or cotton twill, both sides can appear nearly identical. Manufacturers often mark the right side during finishing by creasing, pressing, or applying a temporary chalk line. Printed fabrics show right side first because screen or rotogravure printing deposits pigment on the face, leaving the back paler. Pile fabrics such as velvet, corduroy, and terry cloth have a definitive right side where the loops or cut pile stand upright; the reverse shows only the base weave or knit structure.
Mill finishers must identify and declare right side because cutters working from lay plans need to position patterns correctly. Bias, nap, and directional prints all require that all plies in a cutting lay face the same direction. When wrong side accidentally faces up in the lay, finished pieces may show uneven shade, lost pattern registration, or pile running in wrong direction. This becomes expensive waste if discovered only after sewing.
The terminology reflects ancient hand-loom practice. The 'right' side was literally the correct one to show to customers or nobles; the wrong side remained hidden. Industrial finishing inherited this language. Print shops, dyers, and weavers all speak of right and wrong side because it remains the fastest way to specify which face must be processed, inspected, or protected. In a mill running 200 meters per minute, the distinction is not optional.
