ringdown: a telephone signal that rings and trips a relay

A ringdown is an electrical signal sent down a telephone line that serves two purposes simultaneously: it rings an audible bell at the receiving end and allows a relay to operate, typically to open or close a circuit. The term originated in manual telephone switchboard practice, where operators used ringdown signals to alert each other across dedicated inter-office trunks. Unlike a ringing signal that simply alerts a human listener, a ringdown is designed to perform work, making it a control signal as much as a notification.

The classic ringdown uses 20 Hz alternating current superimposed on the telephone line to energize an electromagnet that both vibrates a mechanical bell and holds a relay in the operated position. When the signal stops, the relay springs back and the bell goes silent. This design works reliably over the relatively long distances of telephone lines without requiring complex decoding equipment. The frequency of 20 Hz was chosen because it sits well below voice frequencies, minimizing interference with speech, yet travels effectively through telephone cables and switches of the era.

Ringdown versus ringing and supervision

A ringdown differs from conventional telephone ringing, which typically uses 40 to 90 Hz AC and is designed only to alert people. Ringdown also differs from loop-start or ground-start signaling, which use direct current to signal off-hook conditions. In switchboard and trunk line practice, ringdown provided positive confirmation that a call had reached its destination and could trigger automatic recording, line seizure, or switching operations. The relay drop associated with ringdown made it useful for controlling equipment rather than just notifying operators.

Ringdown systems remained common in industrial telephone networks, railway dispatching systems, and some fire alarm systems well into the digital era. A dedicated ringdown line between two locations could initiate an immediate connection without dialing or operator intervention, making it valuable where speed and reliability mattered. Some rural telephone exchanges still use variants of ringdown signaling on party lines to ring individual houses while leaving the line available for conversation.

The name reflects the two-part action: the ring (the audible signal) and the down (the relay dropping into its operated state). Modern VoIP telephone systems have largely replaced ringdown with software-controlled signaling, but the term persists in telecommunications standards and in the infrastructure of older dedicated telephone systems, particularly in industrial, utility, and emergency dispatch applications where hardwired reliability remains preferable to packet-based networks.
