rocker switch

An electromechanical device used to control electrical circuits by rocking or pivoting a hinged actuator around a central axis to connect or disconnect contacts.

A rocker switch is a spring-loaded electrical switch with a lever or button that pivots around a central point. Press down on one end, and the lever rocks over its fulcrum to move internal metal contacts into or out of electrical contact, completing or breaking a circuit. The name comes directly from this rocking motion. Most rocker switches are momentary (spring back to center when released) or maintained (stay in the position you leave them), and they come in single-pole, double-pole, and multi-throw configurations depending on how many circuits they control and how many positions they offer.

Rocker switches are everywhere in industrial settings because they are cheap, reliable, and easy to operate with a gloved hand or wet fingers. A typical rocker switch rated for 20 amperes at 250 volts AC will cost between two and eight dollars depending on construction and durability. The actuator (the moving part you touch) is usually nylon or phenolic plastic, and the contacts are silver-plated brass or nickel-plated copper alloy. The housing is typically made from thermoset plastic or polycarbonate that can withstand oil, grease, and temperature swings.

Variants and failure modes

Rocker switches come in illuminated versions, where a small LED or neon lamp mounted behind the actuator glows when power flows or when the switch is in the ON position. Waterproof versions seal the actuator shaft with rubber boots or silicone gaskets for use near washdown areas. Latching rockers stay in the pressed position until manually pressed again, useful for toggle functions. The most common failure is contact oxidation or pitting: when circuits carry current near the switch rating for years, the silver coating on the contacts erodes, increasing resistance and causing the switch to overheat or fail to conduct reliably. Mechanical wear can also cause the spring to weaken, so the switch no longer snaps back to center.

Rocker switches sit at the user interface level of control panels and portable equipment. They connect to larger contactors, motor starters, and relays that actually handle high power, or they control 24-volt pilot circuits in industrial automation. Their ease of use and low cost make them standard on everything from hand-held power tools to large stationary presses. They have largely replaced older toggle switches and push-button combinations in modern equipment because the rocking design is faster to operate and more intuitive, especially for operators wearing safety glasses or thick gloves.
