A rockpicker removes unwanted rock and overburden from raw ore, concentrating the valuable minerals before further processing. This can be a human worker standing at a vibrating table or conveyor, or an automated machine that uses density separation, air classification, or visual scanning to reject material. The job exists because freshly mined ore arrives mixed with host rock, clay, and other gangue that must be separated early to reduce handling costs downstream.

In underground and open pit operations, rockpickers work as part of the ore dressing stage, after primary crushing but before milling or roasting. Manual rockpickers were historically the norm, especially in smaller or older operations, selecting by hand or with a hammer to break up clay-bound clots. Modern facilities increasingly use machines: vibrating screens with air legs separate by size and density; density tables shake wet ore so lighter waste floats off; optical sorters with cameras and air jets eject identified barren rock in real time.

Where the work sits in the process

Rockpicking sits at the boundary between mining (extracting the ore body) and milling (concentrating the valuable mineral). A sharp reduction in waste at this stage cuts energy use and leaching reagent consumption later. In copper, gold, and iron operations, rockpickers save tonnage going to the mill by 10 to 40 percent, depending on ore grade and selectivity. The rejected rock may be discarded to waste rock piles or, if it contains minor ore minerals, returned to coarser crushing circuits.

The human rockpicker role has shrunk in mechanized operations but remains in artisanal and small-scale mining, in hand-sorted gemstone and alluvial recovery, and in some gravity-based tin and tungsten beneficiation plants. Where wages are low and ore grade is variable, manual sorting can be economic. Where volume is high or ore is fine-grained, machines are necessary; a vibrating table or sorter can handle 50 to 200 tonnes per hour depending on feed size and density contrast.

The term rockpicker is used in English-language mining; related terms include trommel operator (rotary screening), jig tender (hydraulic sorting), and washer attendant (scrubbing clay-bound ore). The work is physically demanding for humans, involving repetitive striking, heavy lifting, and exposure to dust, water spray, and vibration. Proper guarding and water spray control are essential on mechanical equipment to prevent hand injuries and inhalation hazards.
