district

A specific, usually named area of the coalface where particular seams are worked.

district: a named section of the working coalface

A district is a defined segment of the coalface assigned to a specific working crew or shift. It represents the practical unit of coal extraction, typically stretching along the face for a set distance (commonly 20 to 40 yards, depending on mine layout and seam thickness) and extending into the coal to the depth where that crew's responsibility ends. Each district has its own ventilation branch, props, and coal-clearance route, making it a self-contained production zone within the larger mine workings.

Districts exist because large coalfaces cannot be worked as a single operation. A face 200 yards long will be divided into perhaps five or six districts, each with its own ganger or deputy in charge. This structure allows supervision, safety inspection, and output measurement to happen at a manageable scale. A crew knows exactly which coal is theirs to extract and which passages, props, and equipment belong to their district. When a seam splits or the geology changes along the face, district boundaries often shift to match the work.

Ventilation and safety run along district lines. Air flows through a main return road and splits into branches feeding each district separately. If one district encounters gas accumulation or roof instability, the problem can be isolated and addressed without shutting down the entire face. Each district also has its own system for moving coal back to the main haulage road, whether by conveyor, skip, or manual loading, and this separation keeps traffic patterns predictable and injury risk lower.

The term reflects the administrative and geographical nature of coal mining rather than a geological one. A district is not defined by the coal seam itself (that is the seam) but by human organization: crew assignment, equipment placement, and operational responsibility. A single seam may contain ten districts on the morning shift and a different ten on the afternoon shift, with crews rotating or consolidating based on staffing and demand. The name, usually a letter or number (such as District A or No. 3 District), is understood only within that mine.

Districts appear in production records, safety reports, and shift handovers as the basic unit of accountability. Output per district per shift was tracked to assess crew performance and coal quality. A district that consistently underperformed or suffered roof trouble would be investigated; a productive one might be expanded or held as a standard. In modern mines using longwall or continuous miners, the term is less common, but in bord-and-pillar or conventional pillar work it remains the practical language of the coalface.
