A roll cage is a welded steel tube frame installed inside a vehicle's cabin that absorbs and distributes crash energy, particularly during rollover events. The frame typically uses seamless steel tubing between 1.5 and 2.5 inches in diameter, welded at joints with continuous fillet welds to create rigid triangulated structures that resist bending and collapse when the vehicle's roof contacts the ground or another vehicle.

The basic structure consists of vertical posts (A-pillars and B-pillars reinforced or replaced entirely), horizontal side rails running along the floor and roof line, and diagonal cross-bracing that triangulates the frame to prevent racking. The number and placement of tubes varies by vehicle class and intended use. A street car might have a four-point cage (front and rear hoops), while a rally car or off-road vehicle often includes six-, eight-, or ten-point designs with additional tubing for door impact protection and attachment of safety harnesses.

Installation methods differ by application. Bolt-in cages use threaded inserts or flat plates welded to the vehicle frame and connect to the cage with bolted joints, allowing removal and storage. Welded cages are permanently attached to the chassis and body, requiring cutting and grinding for removal. Racing series and rally regulations specify exact tube dimensions, wall thickness, and weld quality; FIA and national motorsports governing bodies publish detailed specifications. Street installations often prioritize visibility and headroom, so tubes run behind side windows rather than across them.

Common failure modes include inadequate diagonal bracing (causing the cage to fold rather than transmit load), poor welds that crack under impact, undersized tubing that cannot support the vehicle's mass, and weak mounting points where the cage attaches to the chassis. A cage is only as strong as the points where it connects to the vehicle structure. Mounts that pull through the floor pan or fracture at welds waste the cage's energy absorption capacity. Corrosion in seams can weaken the frame over years of exposure to salt and moisture.

The term roll cage reflects its primary purpose: preventing injury when the vehicle rolls onto its roof. In motorsports, a proper cage has become mandatory for competitor safety; street vehicles rarely carry them except in high-performance or off-road use where rollover risk is elevated. The cage works in concert with safety harnesses, helmets, and padding to create a survival cell. Without secure harness mounting and proper restraint, occupants can still move inside the cage during impact and strike the tubes themselves, so the cage is one element in a layered safety system, not a standalone solution.
