Rg: a mass unit for cosmic and quantum scales

A ronnagram is a unit of mass in the SI system equal to 1027 grams, or one septillion grams in short-scale English. Its symbol is Rg. It belongs to the family of SI prefixes adopted by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) to extend measurement capability across extreme ranges. The prefix "ronna" derives from the Italian word for nine, because it represents the ninth power of 1000 (1027 = (103)9).

The ronnagram entered official SI nomenclature in November 2022, when BIPM added four new extreme-range prefixes: ronna and quetta (larger) and ronto and quecto (smaller). These additions were driven by practical needs in emerging fields. Astronomers measure stellar and galactic masses in units that benefit from this expansion; computer scientists working with zettabyte and yottabyte datasets found a corresponding gap in mass units for theoretical frameworks and standards documentation.

In practical metrology and inspection work, you will rarely encounter the ronnagram directly. A solar mass is approximately 2 × 1030 grams, or about 2000 ronnarams. Earth's mass is roughly 6 × 1027 grams, or roughly 6 ronnarams. The unit serves primarily in scientific computation, fundamental physics research, and standardized documentation rather than in shop-floor measurement or conventional industrial inspection.

The ronnagram's role is systemic rather than practical. Metrologists and standards bodies use it to ensure continuity and symmetry in the SI framework. Without it, certain large-scale calculations in astrophysics or theoretical mass-energy relations would require awkward notation or informal conventions. Its existence guarantees that any mass, from subatomic particles to black holes, can be expressed in SI units with a single standard convention.
