Room and pillar is a mining method where horizontal layers of ore or coal are extracted in a pattern that leaves behind a regular grid of unmined material, called pillars, to support the overlying rock. The mined-out spaces are the rooms. This pattern is planned from the outset and applied systematically across an entire ore body or seam, typically at depths between 100 and 1,200 meters. The method works well in flat-lying deposits where the ore or coal has consistent thickness and reasonable strength.

The geometry varies with local conditions. Pillar width and room width are chosen based on the depth of mining, the strength of the rock being left behind, and the load it must carry. Coal mining often uses narrower pillars, sometimes 20 to 40 meters wide, with rooms of similar or larger span. The ratio of pillar to total area (the extraction ratio) typically ranges from 40 to 70 percent, meaning 30 to 60 percent of the ore remains in place as support. Larger pillars are needed at greater depth because vertical stress increases with the weight of overburden.

A major hazard is pillar failure under load. As extraction proceeds and stress concentrates on the remaining pillars, they can fracture suddenly, triggering collapses that may propagate across a wide area. The risk is highest in the retreat phase, when miners work backward and extract additional coal or ore from pillar edges, intentionally reducing support as they leave. Ground control requires careful monitoring of stress, rock mechanics testing, and sometimes abandonment of marginal pillars. Abandoned workings can also suffer long-term deterioration from water infiltration and corrosion.

Room and pillar differs from longwall mining, which uses a continuous moving face and controlled subsidence. In contrast, room and pillar aims to keep the surface stable by preserving pillar strength, though this means leaving ore in the ground permanently in many cases. Some operations use a two-phase approach: initial extraction at a high ratio in the advance phase, then selective pillar recovery in retreat, but only where geology and stress estimates permit it safely.

The method is economical for thick, uniform seams of moderate to high value, particularly coal, potash, and salt. It allows flexible work scheduling because sections can be worked independently, and it requires less capital equipment than longwall systems. However, recovery rates are lower than longwall mining, and the scattered pillar pattern can complicate future mining if the operation is resumed or deepened. Ventilation of large room networks also demands careful planning, especially in coal mines where methane and dust control are critical.
