In coal mining, a room is a rectangular section of the coal seam where extraction takes place, typically running perpendicular to the main entry or haulageway. The room is where miners operate cutting machines, drill for explosives, or hand-load coal, depending on the mine's method and era. A room might be 15 to 30 feet wide and extend 100 feet or more into the seam, with the coal face advancing as material is removed.

Rooms are laid out as part of a broader mine plan called the room and pillar system, the dominant method in American underground coal mining for over a century. Parallel rooms are driven out from the main entries, leaving behind thick columns or pillars of unmined coal to support the roof. The width and spacing of rooms depend on the thickness of the coal seam, the strength of the overlying rock, and the recovery rate the operator wants. Thicker seams allow wider rooms; weaker roof rock demands smaller pillar support.

Ventilation is critical in a room. Fresh air must reach the working face to dilute methane gas and coal dust, and stale air must flow out toward the return airways. A room that is too long or poorly ventilated becomes a hazard; gas can accumulate at the far end, and roof falls become harder to detect and respond to. Roof bolts or timber supports hold up the immediate working area, but the pillar itself is the ultimate load-bearing element.

The term originated from the straightforward layout: miners create a room to work in by leaving a pillar standing on either side. It contrasts with the older long wall method, where coal is extracted along a long continuous face with no pillars left behind. The room and pillar method is slower per unit of coal per unit of time, but it is safer, easier to ventilate, and allows selective extraction of better coal seams within the same mine.

A room becomes worked out when the coal is largely removed, and it may then be part of a pillar extraction plan: in later phases, miners return to cut down the pillars themselves, allowing the roof to collapse in a controlled way and maximizing total recovery. This is high-hazard work done only near the end of a mine's life.
