A rother nail is a heavy fastening pin used to secure the rudder irons, the metal bands and straps that bind a ship's rudder to its stock and sternpost. The nail has an unusually large, flat head, sometimes called a washer head or rove head, which spreads load across the timber or iron it passes through. This head diameter, typically several times wider than the shank, prevents the nail from pulling through the material under the enormous forces that a rudder experiences in rough water.
The term "rother" derives from "rudder," making this a purpose-specific fastener rather than a general-duty nail. Shipwrights and ship's carpenters used rother nails exclusively in rudder assembly, where their strength and holding power were essential. The nails were typically forged from iron, with lengths ranging from 4 to 10 inches depending on the vessel's size and the thickness of the rudder irons being fastened.
Construction and Loading
Rother nails differ fundamentally from common nails in their head proportions. While a standard nail head might be 1.5 to 2 times the shank diameter, a rother nail head could be 4 to 6 times as wide, creating a bearing surface that could measure up to 2 inches across on larger nails. The shank itself was typically tapered, allowing the nail to be driven without splitting the timber while the massive head prevented withdrawal as the wood swelled and shrank with moisture and temperature changes.
Installation involved driving the rother nail through pre-drilled or pilot-hole timber, then often clinching it on the opposite side, a process where the point is hammered over to create a permanent mechanical lock. This dual resistance, from the head bearing on one side and the clinched point on the other, made the joint virtually immovable. Rudders are among the most heavily stressed components of a wooden ship; a rother nail's design directly addressed this stress concentration.
The rother nail became largely obsolete with the transition to steam-powered iron and steel vessels in the 19th century, as welded and bolted rudder assemblies replaced the wooden rudder stocks and forged-iron bands of sail-era ships. Maritime museums and wooden ship restoration projects remain among the few places where these fasteners are still specified, though modern reproductions are sometimes manufactured for historical reconstruction work.
