It measures the span during which a new crop of trees grows from seedlings or coppice to harvestable size. In managed forestry, this period typically ranges from 40 to 80 years for softwood species like spruce and pine, and 80 to 120 years or more for hardwoods like oak and beech, depending on site quality, climate, and target tree diameter.
The length of rotation time is driven by both biology and economics. Foresters choose a rotation length by projecting when the stand will reach commercial maturity, meaning trees have sufficient diameter and volume to justify the cost of extraction and processing. A short rotation of 30 to 40 years may suit pulpwood production, where fiber length matters less than yield; a long rotation of 100+ years suits sawlog production, where large, defect-free timber commands premium prices. The decision also reflects land rent, discount rates, and expected future timber prices.
Rotation time interacts directly with silvicultural method. Clear-felling systems rely on a single, defined rotation period, after which the entire stand is removed and the site restocked. Selection forestry, by contrast, operates on a continuous rather than rotational basis, with trees harvested individually as they reach target size. Even-aged management, which depends on a fixed rotation, allows predictable planning of harvests and replanting; uneven-aged management demands longer-term inventory control but avoids the landscape and ecological disruption of wholesale clear-cutting.
Rotation time varies with species, elevation, soil type, and rainfall. A spruce stand on rich lowland soil may reach commercial size in 50 years; the same species at 400 meters elevation on poor soil might require 70 years. Market conditions shift rotation practice too: strong demand for large logs may justify extending rotation beyond biological maturity, while pulpwood shortages can prompt early harvesting. Climate change is forcing foresters to reassess rotations, as faster growth in some regions competes against increased pest and drought risk.
In practice, rotation time defines the cadence of entire forest operations: replanting schedules, equipment investment, labor planning, and cash flow forecasting all hinge on when harvests occur. Foresters record rotation as part of stand inventory data. Where rotation time is badly misjudged, either too short, leaving trees below target size, or too long, risking storm or pest loss, returns suffer. The term is also called rotation length or rotation period, though rotation period sometimes refers specifically to the years since the last harvest rather than the planned total span.
