Hay typically contains 30 to 40 percent crude fiber, while silage ranges from 25 to 35 percent depending on the crop stage at harvest. Straw, used as both bedding and supplemental feed, runs higher in fiber and lower in protein than hay, making it less nutritious but useful for bulk and rumen fill. The digestibility of roughage declines sharply as plants mature; timothy hay cut at bloom stage yields 60 to 65 percent digestible organic matter, while the same hay harvested at seed stage drops to 45 percent or less.

A forage analyzer or laboratory test reveals these values, which determine whether the material meets the nutritional requirements of specific animals. Dairy farmers managing high-production herds require higher quality roughage, typically below 35 percent ADF; beef cattle and sheep tolerate coarser material. Proper storage preserves nutritional value: hay stored under cover in a dry location retains quality far better than material exposed to weather.

Roughage cannot be omitted from ruminant rations without triggering digestive disorders. The fiber stimulates saliva production and rumen contractions, preventing acidosis and displaced abomasum. Concentrate feeds (grains, protein supplements) provide energy density but lack the bulk and fiber roughage provides. Most rations combine both: a 1200-pound dairy cow might consume 40 to 50 pounds of hay or silage daily alongside 15 to 25 pounds of concentrate, depending on milk production targets and forage quality.
