A round dance is a stereotyped circular movement performed by a foraging honey bee on the honeycomb to recruit nestmates to a food source located within roughly 50 meters of the hive. The bee traces a tight circle, reversing direction repeatedly, while vibrating its body and producing sound. Other workers gather around the dancer, make antennal contact, and pick up odor cues from the dancer's body before departing to forage at the signaled location.
The round dance encodes minimal directional information compared to the waggle dance, which is used for distant sources. Instead, it primarily signals food quality and distance range through the vigor and frequency of the circular pattern. A bee performing a vigorous round dance on a flower with high nectar concentration will recruit more foragers than one dancing for a marginal food source. The dance produces sound frequencies in the range of 200 to 300 hertz, which vibrates the comb and attracts bees from surrounding areas of the hive.
Beekeepers and agricultural researchers monitor round dancing activity as an indicator of forage availability near the apiary. Increased round dancing during a nectar flow suggests adequate local food resources and reduced likelihood of robbing or starvation stress. Conversely, absence of round dancing indicates foragers must travel farther or that forage has diminished. This behavior is particularly important in early spring and late summer when field flowers near the hive may be the difference between colony survival and failure.
Round dancing appears to be the ancestral form of honey bee recruitment communication. The waggle dance likely evolved as an elaboration of round dancing, adding directional components through the angle and speed of the waggle phase. Some Apis species and related bee genera use variants of circular dancing for recruitment, suggesting this mechanism is deeply conserved in honey bee evolution.
