To row is to propel a vessel through water by pulling oars through the water in a coordinated, rhythmic motion. Each oar blade catches the water during the power stroke, generating forward thrust through the mechanical advantage of the oar as a lever, then exits the water on the recovery stroke as the rower prepares for the next pull. The oarlock, a U-shaped pivot on the gunwale, acts as the fulcrum.
Rowing technique varies by vessel type and crew size. A single rower sits in a small dinghy or skiff with two oars, one in each hand. A pulling boat or launch may have multiple rowers in a line, each with one oar. Rowing shells and racing boats optimize for speed through light construction and precise crew synchronization, where timing errors between rowers cause the hull to pitch and lose efficiency. Commercial work boats and lifeboats prioritize stability and power; their crews pull heavier oars in rougher conditions.
A rower's output depends on body weight, strength, and the gear ratio set by oar length and oarlock position. Water resistance increases with boat speed and wetted hull surface. Fatigue accumulates quickly because rowing engages nearly the entire body, particularly the legs, back, and shoulders. In heavy seas or strong currents, even experienced rowers struggle to maintain headway, and rowing becomes a holding action rather than steady progress.
The term "row" appears in shipyard contexts when discussing auxiliary propulsion for vessels without engines, emergency procedures for lifeboats, and the physical training of crew. Modern commercial vessels rarely rely on rowing, yet lifeboat crews still train in rowing techniques because oars require no fuel and remain functional when engines fail.
