A row crop is any cultivated plant grown in evenly spaced lines across a field, typically with enough space between rows to permit mechanical cultivation, harvesting, or both. Common row crops include corn, soybeans, cotton, and vegetables such as tomatoes, lettuce, and carrots. The defining feature is not the plant itself but the planting method, which creates parallel furrows or beds that allow equipment to move along the spaces between plants.
The row configuration serves multiple practical purposes. It enables mechanical cultivation for weed control without damaging the crop itself, since a tractor or cultivator can run down the middles without hitting plants. Row spacing also improves air circulation around plants, reducing fungal disease risk. For crops like corn and soybeans, standard row widths are typically 30 inches or 36 inches, though some growers now use narrower 20-inch or wider 40-inch spacing depending on equipment and soil conditions. Vegetable crops often use narrower rows, sometimes as little as 18 inches.
The economics of row crops depend heavily on mechanization. Hand labor or spot-spraying between rows becomes prohibitively expensive at field scale, so row-crop farming assumes the operator owns or can access equipment sized to those row widths. This created a technical constraint: for much of the 20th century, row-crop equipment was standardized around 4-row, 6-row, and 8-row units matched to tractors. A tractor branded as a row-crop tractor historically meant one with adjustable axle width and lower center of gravity, designed to straddle crop rows without crushing plants.
Row-crop harvesting equipment is equally specialized. Mechanical corn pickers and combines have gathering mechanisms and header widths designed to work between rows. Vegetable harvesters for tomatoes, peppers, or leafy crops similarly assume a known row width and spacing. Deviating from standard row widths means either custom equipment or manual harvesting, both expensive alternatives.
The term contrasts with broadcast crops, where seed is scattered across an entire prepared field without rows, and with orchard or perennial crops that occupy fixed positions. In modern usage, row crop often implies commodity crops suitable for large-scale mechanized production, though vegetable farmers also use rows, and the term applies equally whether plants are grown on flat ground or raised beds. Precision agriculture has added GPS-guided row tracking and variable-rate fertilizer application to row-crop farming, but the fundamental row-based layout remains central to field economics and machinery design.
