A run around is a maneuver in which a locomotive detaches from one end of a train consist, travels along a separate track to the opposite end, and re-couples in order to pull the train in the reverse direction. This is the practical alternative to a turntable or wye when a locomotive must reverse the consist's direction on a line where turning infrastructure does not exist.
The run around track is typically a siding long enough to accommodate the locomotive and any cars it takes with it during the move. In practice, the locomotive uncouples from the consist, moves forward clear of the train, backs onto the siding, travels its length to clear the main line, then reverses and couples to the opposite end of the consist. The consist itself remains stationary on the main line or a parallel track during this operation.
Run arounds are essential in branch line and industrial rail operations where permanent turning facilities are absent or uneconomical. Freight operations, local switching, and heritage railways rely on them regularly. Crew familiarity with the track geometry is critical; miscalculation of siding length or main line clearance can result in fouling the main line and obstructing traffic, or insufficient room to complete the maneuver.
The speed and smoothness of a run around depends on consist length, siding geometry, and locomotive power. Longer consists require longer sidings and more careful coupling. Poor track condition, sharp curves at siding junctions, or inadequate switching lead can force crews to make multiple moves, extending the operation significantly.
The term reflects the literal action of the locomotive: it runs around the consist to reach its opposite end. This terminology is standard across North American freight and shortline operations, though the practice itself is as old as branch line railroading.
