run-flat

A pneumatic tire designed to resist the effects of deflation when punctured, and to allow the vehicle to continue to be driven (although usually at a reduced speed).

run-flat: tire that keeps you moving after a puncture

A run-flat tire is a pneumatic tire engineered to support the weight of a vehicle even after it loses air pressure from a puncture or leak. Unlike a conventional tire that becomes undriveable within seconds of deflation, a run-flat allows continued operation at reduced speed, typically up to 50 mph, for a limited distance of 50 to 100 miles depending on the design and load. This capability eliminates the immediate immobility that typically follows a blowout, allowing drivers to reach a service facility or safe location under their own power rather than calling for roadside assistance.

Run-flats achieve this through reinforced sidewalls. The sidewall rubber compound is significantly stiffer and thicker than in standard tires, capable of bearing the vehicle's weight when internal air pressure drops to near zero. Some designs use an internal rubber ring or insert that takes the load; others rely purely on sidewall structure. This stiffness means run-flats generate more heat during normal driving and typically wear faster than conventional tires. They also produce a noticeably firmer ride due to reduced compliance in the sidewall.

Variants and trade-offs

Tire manufacturers produce run-flats in two main categories: self-supporting designs (which need no additional vehicle hardware) and systems that pair with electronic tire pressure monitoring and vehicle suspension tuning. Luxury and performance vehicle brands commonly fit run-flats as original equipment; they are less common as aftermarket replacements due to cost and ride quality concerns. Some drivers opt for run-flat capable tires specifically to eliminate the need to carry and change a spare wheel, reducing vehicle weight and cargo space. However, run-flats are more expensive than equivalent conventional tires, and their puncture repair options are limited; a damaged run-flat often cannot be repaired and must be replaced.

The term "run-flat" entered automotive vocabulary in the late 1990s as the technology moved from military and specialty applications into consumer vehicles. Michelin, Bridgestone, Goodyear, and Continental all manufacture run-flat lines. OEM fitment on premium brands, particularly BMW and Mercedes-Benz, has driven adoption. A vehicle originally equipped with run-flats requires either replacement run-flats or a complete changeover to conventional tires with a full-size spare wheel; mixing run-flat and conventional tires on the same vehicle is not recommended due to handling differences.

Run-flat performance depends critically on proper tire pressure maintenance. Electronic tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) are essential, as a slow leak in a run-flat can go unnoticed longer than in a conventional tire; the vehicle will still feel relatively normal until pressure drops below safe levels. Vehicles designed for run-flats often feature stiffer suspension tuning to complement the tires' reduced compliance, so switching to conventional tires can noticeably change handling and comfort.
